PROJECT 3
Scanography
FINAL PROJECT
Perceptions Left in the Dark
9 May 2019
The work of Maitha Demithan displays her culture and exploration of self-identity through Scanography. While my project theme connects a little less to me in terms of personal exploration, the items used in the project are still mine and therefore carry a certain emotional connection and draws on memories of travels and yearnings for more.
Each photo contains items from a specific country and with this work I attempt to convey the difficulty of perceiving culture. While these objects provide a shallow glimpse into someone else’s culture possibly enlightening us, they may also close our mind to our established ideas and perceptions. Another concept is that tourists may only bring home those physical aspects of a culture, despite having seen the country, learned language, and socialized with locals and that the objects themselves can never do this experience or the people of that country justice. This project theme further explores the anonymity of culture through these objects as left mostly in the dark and an understanding that while each of us will have our preferences to certain objects, we must remember that they are all still objects representative of how we must give value to each culture.
The photographic genre that this project links to is Still Life in Scanography. I chose to do this project with Scanography because I of the high detail rendering from a scanner as well mysterious viewing lens it can provide.
